The Dentate Gyrus is one of several structures (including the hippocampus) that compose the hippocampal formation. The shape of the hippocampal formation is complicated with structures folding in on each other along two dimensions, a complicated structure to underlie the complicated process of forming new memories.

Advanced

The dentate gyrus was named because of its notched external appearance (dentate meaning tooth-like). This cortical region is clearly involved in the ability to store new memories via its relationship with the hippocampus.
