Both the primary and secondary visual pathways receive information from the environment via the receptors located in the Retina of the eye. The information leaving the retina of each eye, via the Optic Nerve, reflects aspects of the visual world from each of the visual fields. When the optic nerve splits, however, at the Optic Chiasm, the information conducted by each side will come exclusively from opposite visual field. (See Figure 11) for a more detailed description of the optic nerve fibers that cross over to the opposite hemisphere via the optic chiasm.)
