The Spinal Cord is that portion of the central nervous system that connects the brain to all of the body located below the head. Sensory pathways of the spinal cord convey information from diverse sensory receptors toward the brain, while motor pathways convey information away from the brain to the muscles and organs of the body. The spinal cord is divided into distinct segments that contain neurons dedicated to the processing of information for a particular region of the body. Each segment also contains the fiber tracts for segments found both above and below that segment. When damage occurs to the spinal cord, the processing of sensory information and control of motor function below the site of damage will be adversely affected.
