5. Drugs in another category block the deactivation of specific neurotransmitters. Some of these drugs decrease reuptake by the presynaptic membrane and others block enzymatic breakdown in the synaptic cleft. Some stimulants (amphetamine and cocaine) and tricyclic antidepressants block the reuptake of the catecholamines, dopamine and norepinephrine. Physotigmine blocks the reuptake of acetylcholine by the presynaptic membrane. Pargyline (a monoamineoxidase /MAO inhibitor) blocks the breakdown of norepinephrine. Each thereby increases the activity of neurons affected by this action.
