The Central Fissure is one of the deepest grooves on the surface of the cerebrum. It separates the frontal and parietal lobes of each hemisphere. Primary motor cortex lies in front of the central fissure within the frontal lobe and primary somatosensory cortex lies behind the central fissure within the parietal lobe.

The central fissure is a landmark found in most higher primate species such as rhesus monkey, chimpanzee, and humans; but not in lower mammalian species such as our domesticated friends, the cat and dog.
