4 - Spinal Cord
The complex circuits formed by the pathways involving the cerebellum and basal ganglia ultimately influence the activity of individual muscle groups via their input to cortical motor control areas. These cortical areas influence the activity of spinal cord motor neurons via descending projections in the dorsolateral and ventromedial pathways as described previously. In addition, the basal ganglia convey important information via the dorsolateral and ventromedial pathways to the red nucleus and reticular formation located within the midbrain and medulla and the vestibular nuclei located within the medulla.
