The following discussion synthesizes information presented in several learning textbooks (Catania, 1998, pp. 203-204; Klein, 1987, pp. 50-52; Mazur, 1994, pp. 73-75; Pierce & Epling, 1995, pp. 64-66). It should be noted that these references are not always in complete agreement. We will present what appears to be the most universally accepted definition of each term.
