Fibers leaving the superior olive travel upward in a tract called the lateral lemniscus to synapse in the Inferior Colliculus of the dorsal midbrain. The inferior colliculus is a part of the tectum of the midbrain, along with the superior colliculi of the visual system. The neurons of the inferior colliculi respond to auditory events in particular locations, thereby providing a spatial map of the auditory world. These neurons aid in the localization of sounds.
