Following the absorption of light by the rod and cone cells, the neural signals move to the Bipolar Cells of the second primary retinal layer. The bipolar cells connect the receptor cells of the first primary retinal layer with the ganglion cells of the third primary retinal layer, and release the excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate, upon excitation.
