1. The Presynaptic Neuron carries information away from the neuron via the axon.

Advanced

Some specialized synapses have receptor sites on the presynaptic membrane, known as presynaptic receptors. Typically, the activation of a presynaptic receptor will inhibit the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. Occasionally, activation will facilitate neurotransmitter release. An autoreceptor is a presynaptic receptor that responds to the neurotransmitter released by the same neuron. This arrangement may provide negative feedback for the neuron, reducing neurotransmitter release in response to increased concentration in the synaptic cleft.
