Introductory Biological Psychology Tutorials

Information

The Psychology Centre of Athabasca University has developed a series of online tutorials primarily for use by students in the introductory psychology course, Psychology 289 (Psychology as a Natural Science). Although the tutorials are primarily intended for introductory psychology students, each tutorial includes advanced information that permits students to study most topics in greater depth than is customary in an introductory psychology course. These tutorials have been developed by Dr. Sandra M. Nagel of Saginaw Valley State University and Dr. Lyle K. Grant of Athabasca University, with the technical assistance of Dean Mah of Athabasca University. Janice Mintzler of Creation Graphics developed the figures for the tutorials. These tutorials generally share a similar format:

  • an initial section in which students work with an image-mapped graphic to identify visually based information such as brain structures. In this section students also read descriptions associated with the graphical information to develop a verbal knowledge of the material.
  • a second section in which students do a self-test matching visually based information (e.g., brain structures) to labels;
  • a third section consisting of multiple-choice self-test items that test student knowledge of the material presented in the tutorial.

The following table lists all the available tutorials:
