Participation in Online Discussions (22%)

To participate in the online discussions for Psychology 476, follow the steps outlined below.

  1. Review the Discussion Forum Topics and select the topics in which you wish to participate. You are required to participate in a minimum of three Discussion Forums in this course.
  2. A sign-up sheet for the Discussion Forum for the month will be available the first Monday of the month. Sign up for this forum if it is one you have chosen. You have until Friday to sign up.
  3. Read and/or view the presentation provided for the Discussion Forum in Presentations. The presentation will not be accessible to you until you sign up for the forum.
  4. Respond to the questions and discussion posted in the Discussion Forum. The forum will be open for posting the second Monday of the month, and will close the following Monday.

Participation marks will be given to students who contribute to the forum discussions. You are expected to make substantive contributions to the forum dialogue. To do so, you must have read or viewed the required materials and have given thought to the concepts and issues presented.

Your participation in the online discussion will be evaluated on the basis of both the frequency of your posting to the forums and the quality of your online comments. The grading criteria for participation are outlined below.

Grading CriteriaMarks
Extent of participation You are expected to participate in at least three Discussion Forums and make at least three postings to each forum. These postings may be responses to the questions posted or responses to postings by other students. 10
Quality of comments

Your comments must demonstrate that you have read or viewed the background materials, and that you have given thought to the issues raised. When formulating your comments, you may do the following:

  • Analyse the concepts and issues presented.
  • Provide information from additional sources.
  • Compare and contrast similar concepts or issues.
  • Raise relevant examples.
  • Ask further related questions.
  • Provide personal perceptions.
  • Discuss how information and materials from the course units can be integrated with the presentation.
  • Provide new and related perceptions of an issue.
  • Demonstrate personal development.
  • Cite relevant readings and research.
