Final Exam

The final exam consists of short-answer essay questions requiring answers of between two or three sentences and two paragraphs. The exam can be completed within 1 hour, but you will have up to 3 hours to complete it. This is a closed-book exam, meaning that you may not take any notes, textbooks, or other aids into the examination room. Please be sure to write legibly; an exam that is not legible will not be graded.

The exam items are based on the study questions in the Study Guide, so the key to success on the final exam is learning the answers to the study questions. One way to do this is to go through each question, ask yourself if you know the answer, study the answer in the text if you don't, and go on to the next question. This self- quizzing strategy also works well if you enlist a friend or family member to pose the questions to you.

The final exam items should not come as a surprise to you because you are told in advance what questions may be on the exam: the study questions. However, one minor exception to this general rule is that some of the study questions require students to list the factors responsible for the effectiveness of a particular procedure (e.g., positive reinforcement, extinction, modeling, etc.) and those factors are listed as a part of the study question. However, the corresponding exam items will require you to list the factors yourself.

Note that the exam items are short-answer essay in nature that generally require recall of facts and principles. There are no conceptual problems of the sort that are extensively represented on the unit quizzes. The open-book unit quizzes in the course lend themselves well to conceptual problems, but the Final Exam is the only point in the course when we can test students over their factual mastery of the material.

Please be sure that you have satisfactorily completed all seven of the unit quizzes before you take the final exam.

You must receive a grade of 50% or more on the final exam to pass the course. If you fail the final exam the first time you take it, you may study the material again and take a supplemental exam.
