Course Project
Part 2 Units 3 to 10
Instructions
For the course project, you are asked to write a 10- to 12-page
mock grant proposal. In the social sciences, researchers are funded by
the federal government or other public or private granting
agencies. Since granting agencies have a limited budget, researchers
must compete for these funds. The competition process involves a
detailed research proposal that must justify the research and its
potential relevance to social issues.
Choose an area of research discussed in Part 2 that interests
you. Generate a research question you would like to have
answered. This must be an original question, not one addressed in the
assigned readings. Your grant proposal must argue why this line of
research should be explored. Be sure to contact your tutor to discuss
and refine your subject area. Once you have selected a topic, submit a
written outline of your project to your tutor for approval.

the course project, grading criteria, mark breakdown, and final
weighting, and for useful tips on writing research essays.
