Assignment 3

Part 2 Units 9 and 10

Instructions

Choose two (2) questions from Unit 9 and either part a or part b from the question for Unit 10. Use paragraph form to answer each question completely. Consult this Student Manual for further information about grading criteria, mark breakdown, and final weighting, and for instructions on submitting the assignment for grading.

Unit 9 (Choose two (2) questions.)

  1. Define the term media, and summarize its functions. In your opinion, which type(s) of mass media would best serve all of these functions? Give reasons for your answer.

  2. Summarize the common themes concerning ethnic minorities, women and gender roles, violence, and sexuality characterizing media content.

  3. Define the terms enculturation and political socialization. Find articles in your local newspaper that demonstrate how the media may be used to enculturate individuals with respect to sex roles, politics, and violence. Explain why you feel these articles exemplify the use of the media to enculturate society’s members. Be sure to include copies of the articles with your answer to this question.

  4. Define the direct effects model and the indirect effects model of attitude change. Describe the elaboration likelihood model and its components.

Unit 10 (Choose either a or b, below.)

  1. a. Using the Yale model of persuasive communication, explain how you would advertise a new product, such as a car, a computer, or a soft drink. Explain how you would motivate consumers to take in information about the product and to make a decision to purchase the product. Be sure to include all component parts of the model in your proposal.
    b. Repeat the exercise in (a) above, this time using the theory of reasoned action.
