Resource Materials

Athabasca University’s Psychology 301 relies on a number of Government of Alberta publications. Since these publications undergo regular revisions and are sometimes dropped altogether, it is difficult to ensure the availability of any particular government item used in the course.

This update includes recent changes in resource availability as well as a review of past updates from Oct 04, June 09, Dec 09.

Understanding the labour market: (o/p) A Handbook for Practitioners 1997 is no longer available and has been replaced by

Making sense of labour market information published by Alberta Advanced Education and Career Development (2003, 2008). This resource applies to readings in Unit 2 (p. 18).

This resource is available in PDF format from the following site:

http://alis.alberta.ca/pdf/cshop/LabourMarketInfo.pdf

The Workability handbook published by Alberta Advanced Education and Career Development (1996) has been replaced by Workability: What you need to get & keep a job, published by the Government of Alberta, Employment, Immigration, and Industry (2007). This resource applies to the readings in Unit 5 (p. 74). It can also be accessed in PDF format online at

http://alis.alberta.ca/pdf/cshop/workability.pdf

Also, the Job Seeker’s Handbook has been revised by the Government of Alberta, Employment, Immigration, and Industry (2007). This resource is on the supplementary reading list for Unit 3 (p. 63) and Unit 8 (p. 145).

The following resource is no longer published in print format and will not be replaced. We recommend that you note this deletion on page 3 of your print Student Manual and page 66 of your print Study Guide. For reference in your online course materials, this resource is part of the reading assignment for Unit 4.

Alberta Advanced Education and Career Development. (1995). The competitive race: A guide to human resource practices for small business.

The following two online resources may be used for information and applicable analysis in Unit 4:

Alberta Learning Information Service. (2009). Information resources for employers.

http://alis.alberta.ca/pdf/PSWRnews/employer.pdf

Service Canada. (2009). Human resources management for employers.

http://www.hrmanagement.gc.ca/gol/hrmanagement/site.nsf/eng/index.html

Similarly the following two items are now dropped from the course. They are:

  • Radical Change: The Workbook (1996)
  • Radical Change: A Counsellor’s Guide (1995)

Consequently, we must also drop the following questions from Unit 6 of the course materials:

  • Study Question 6 on page 82
  • Item 2 of the Suggested Activities on page 89

Please write these changes into your course materials now to avoid confusion when you reach that point in the course.
