Anaximander (ca. 610 - 540 B.C.)

Definition:

Ancient Greek philosopher who speculated on an universal substance and on evolution.

Background:

Only a few fragments of Anaximander's work survive. These fragments indicate that he believed that all matter came from a infinite primal substance. He made some scientific hypotheses about the size of the earth and sun and about the evolution of life forms. He believed that humans were descended from fish.
